Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa plans to give artists legal support to fight unfair contracts. Addressing a Gauteng Creative Industries Indaba in Johannesburg, the minister told artists that he will be intervening to make sure that they don’t “die poor”.

Recently, Popstar Zahara accused her recording company of giving her a raw deal. Mthethwa says artists have been duped into signing contracts that they have not been able to fight.

“Artists come from all over the country, when they come here they are only armed with their craft, they are not legal gurus they are locked into legal these contracts forever. We are told “no but leave parties to solve their things”, we’ve been leaving these parties they are not sorting out anything.”
