Reigning Mrs South Africa Nicole Capper has been airlifted to a hospital in Kathmandu in Nepal, after she experienced respiratory complications during an expedition at Mount Everest.

A team of seven South African trekkers are on an expedition to raise funds for children with rare diseases by summiting the highest peak on earth.

Capper was rushed to hospital on Monday night during the teams descend.

One of the climbers Sarel Nong says she is expected to recover soon.

“We are a team of seven. We are on our expedition to Everest base camp. Last night she suffered high altitude while we were still above 4 000 metres above sea level and there was less oxygen. But she was airlifted this morning to Kathmandu hospital and we are expecting her to recover soon, but she is a very strong lady. She will be fine.”
