The National Union of Mineworkers says it’s concerned that over 1700 employees at the Evander Gold Mine in Mpumalanga will be retrenched.

Mine management says that the retrenchments are as a result of the deteriorating and inadequate infrastructure, high operating costs such as rising electricity, labour costs, and a low gold price.

NUM says more people will be negatively be affected by the retrenchments, as one mine worker supports about ten family members.

NUM Highveld Regional Secretary Tshilidzi Mathavha says:”The process will be finalised on the 24th of April, as per the notice of the employer.”

“The employer has indicated that they are to retrench 1700 employees. Which will actually mean that is the closure of the mine, because the company is currently operating with a strength of over 2000 workers.”
