Mpumalanga family still shaken after children’s kidnapping

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Mpumalanga family of the two children kidnapped in January is still traumatized. This comes after two bodies matching the description of their children were discovered by police following an investigation.

The two children, one with albinism, were both taken at gunpoint while sleeping. The one-year old is believed to have been taken by mistake as they wanted his cousin with albinism who is the same age as him.

Nkosikhona Ngwenya’s body is believed to have been found along the N4. While her cousin Gabisile Shabane’s body was found buried in a shallow grave.

The family is too distraught to speak.

When the children were abducted this is what the family said, “These people knew who they wanted. They came in and went straight for the albino kids. They took the girl from the other room then went to take the baby in another room, but they made a mistake and took a wrong baby because the albino one was covered in blankets,” said Duduzile Mavuso – the aunt of the children.

A sangoma from Swaziland has appeared in court in connection with the killings.

“There is a man that earlier on we took in for questioning. Through the process of questioning it came forth that the  two bodies are then recovered. I will not mention how it came forth,” said Mpumalanga Police Spokesman Brigadier Leonard Hlathi.

The family is in the process of identifying the two bodies found.

Police say investigations are still continuing and more arrests are imminent. They will now take DNA samples from the family to determine if indeed the bodies are those of their children.
