‘Motsoeneng had a hand in destroying the culture of the newsroom’

The SABC’s Economics Editor Thandeka Gqubule-Mbeki has told the State Capture Commission in Parktown, Johannesburg of the disintegration of the culture of the newsroom.

Gqubule-Mbeki was one of the SABC 8, who were ultimately fired for failing to follow an instruction from former COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng not to broadcast TV footage of violent protests.

They were subsequently reinstated and Motsoeneng was eventually fired in 2017.

Gqubule says Motsoeneng had a hand in destroying the culture of the newsroom.

Gqubule-Mbeki also says the request to her by SABC TV News Head Nothando Maseko not to cover the so called “Nenegate” saga in December 2015 was illogical and unjournalistic.

Gqubule-Mbeki revealed to the State Capture Commission that Maseko asked her to veer away from reporting on the firing by former President Jacob Zuma of then-Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene and its effect on the rand.

The local currency plunged to close on R16 to the dollar shortly after Zuma’s move in December 2015.
