Motorists must avoid areas around FNB stadium

Johannesburg Metro Police has advised motorists to avoid the area around the FNB stadium where roads have been closed since midnight on Saturday, due to the The Global Citizen Festival.

JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says security at the stadium will also be tightened.

“Soweto highway will be blocked as from midnight to Nasrec road and N1. Motorists can make use of N12 as the alternative route. Metro police officers will be on duty to direct traffic around FNB stadium. The concert starts at 2 pm.”

The festival will take place at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday and be will be broadcast live on several SABC platforms.

It will be broadcast on SABC 1 TV channel, the SABC Digital YouTube channel, Facebook and Twitter – as well as on radio stations, 5FM and Lesedi FM.

The concert line-up includes Beyonce, Casper Nyovest, WhizzKid and Usher.

Leading up to the festival, youth were able to earn tickets by doing good deeds in their communities.

The campaign generated a whopping R15-billion in pledges, which will be administered through the UN or local initiatives.

The public can interact with the SABC’s TV and radio brands during the course of the festival on social media, by using the hashtag #SenzaKwenzeke.

SABC spokesperson, Neo Momodu says, “The festival will be broadcast live on SABC 1 from 4 pm. The 7 o’ clock Nguni news on SABC 1 will be moved to 15:30 in the afternoon to accommodate the broadcast of the festival. SABC news channel 404 will be onsite from 7 o’ clock in the morning to bring live events on morning live.”
