Traffic authorities have advised motorists to be cautious around Emmarentia, Parktown and Newtown in Johannesburg on Sunday morning.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department Spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar, says this is because there will be road closures due to the iThemba Walkathon in support of breast cancer awareness, which has just got under way.

The walkathon will start from Marks Park and participants will go to Newtown and back. Minnaar says traffic will be diverted.

“The walkathon will start at Marks Park at approximately 07:30 and will proceed into Barry Hertzog Avenue, go left into Empire Road and the participants will cross over the Nelson Mandela Bridge into Newtown. They will return along Empire Road and Barry Hertzog Avenue. We want to encourage motorists to be cautious during that time because traffic will be diverted on those roads and there will be officers on duty to monitor the traffic,” says Minnaar.
