The Zeenatul Islam Masjid in District Six wants the City of Cape Town to exclude the calls to prayer, like the athan, and the ringing of church bells, to be excluded from the by-laws that views calls to worship as noise disturbances.

Zeenatul Islam Masjid’s Sheikh Muhammed Moerat says, “The complaint stems from within the neighbourhood of the mosque. Let me point out that the mosque has been standing there for 100 years; the call to prayer has been amplified for the last 60 to 70 years and somebody that moved into the area now all of the sudden is complaining about a nuisance or noise level that is disturbing that particular person.”
