South African Cricketer Dean Elgar has described fellow cricketer Morne Morkel’s resignation as a shock for the team.

Elgar was speaking to members of the media at Kingsmead Stadium ahead of the start of a four-match Test Series against Australia on Thursday in Durban. 32-year-old Morkel announced that he would be resigning at the conclusion of the test series after a successful career of 12 years in cricket.

Elgar says the team respects Morkel’s decision.

“My reaction is quite mutual within our team. It’s a bit of a shock kind of sensation because you don’t expect a guy to retire so soon. He’s been playing 12 years of professional cricket. I’m sure that’s a long time in his own right and I’m sure each individual will feel like he’s still got a lot to give. But being it as it may, we respect his decision and he has provided South African Cricket with 12 years of unbelievable professionalism within the side. His hard work that he has done on and off the field is a massive credit towards him.”
