More women coming into science industry

The Association of South African Women in Science and Engineering, also known as SA WISE, says there are more females joining the science industry despite various challenges.Speaking to the SABC ahead of Women’s Day celebrations in South Africa, Dr Liz van der Merwe of SA WISE, says a lot of women studying science do not reach the post-graduate level, especially in engineering. She says women in the industry feel disadvantaged when they want to have children and there is a limit in the number of opportunities. Click below listen to Dr Liz van der Merwe’s comments.

Meanwhile, Wits University’s Vice Chancellor and Principal, Adam Habib, says a more cultivating environment needs to be created at tertiary institutions for women to excel in science. However, Habib says we are on the right path. “If you come to the universities, the vast number of student are women. Even in leadership positions”
