More than 1,000 observers and journalists have been accredited to monitor the upcoming election in Lesotho.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it is ready to deliver a credible election, but analysts warn that the stakes are very high and losers might not accept the outcome.

About 148 international observers from six missions, 82 observers from diplomatic missions and 666 local observers will have their eye on the Lesotho election.

IEC Commissioner Dr Makase Nyaphisi says: “Airlifting of voting kits to inaccessible areas will be done from the 30th May to 1st of June. The distribution of these materials from the warehouse and to the constituencies to the polling stations is accompanied under the watchful of the police IEC party agents, monitoring and logistics committees.”

About 160 journalists from Lesotho and four other countries will cover the election. But analysts warn stakeholders to keep their eyes open.

NUL political science lecturer DR Motlamelle Kapa says: “The stakes are very high in these elections as I have indicated that at any one time it will be the most competitive election ever in my view.”

More than 1.2 million registered voters are expected to go to 2896 Polling stations.

IEC Commissioner Dr Makase Nyaphisi says: “We are confident that on the 3rd of June we will have done our part to deliver transparent and credible elections for the people of Lesotho.”
