COPE leader Mosiuoa Lekota says R1.2 billion that government had allocated to infrastructure development in Bekkersdal on Gauteng’s West Rand during the tenure of former president, Thabo Mbeki, has disappeared.

Lekota, who is on a campaign trail in the area, says this has led to the collapse of infrastructure in Bekkersdal.

He says corruption has crippled many communities.

“I can not see any check of what was done with that money. The community hall that is used to be here is gone. The tennis courts, and other relaxation and other sports that were budgeted for are gone. Thriving businesses have been completely abandoned. It is a very sad state of affairs. Actually Bekkersdal must be started from the ground.”
