Mokeke overwhelmed with ‘surprise’ call up for Bafana

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Cape Town City utility player Thato Mokeke says he was surprised to hear his name when Bafana Bafana interim coach Molefi Ntseki included him in the national team squad to play Zambia next month.

Mokeke is one of three City players to be called up, alongside captain Thami Mkhize and striker Kermit Erasmus.  Mokeke says he had just been focused on playing well for City, and the thought of a call-up at this time was the last thing on his mind.

Mokeke, who last played for the national team in 2014, says he does not want to change his mindset, and will just continue to focus on working hard.

Mokeke only joined City in January, and the former SuperSport United player says while like every player he dreamt of being called up, he did not think it would come so soon.

The 30-year-old says he wants to thank the team’s coaching staff, and also his captain Mkhize, who has opened the doors for national call-ups from City.

Mkhize, who now has 11 Bafana caps and was a key member of the Bafana team at the recent AFCON finals, says it is always an honour to represent your country. – Report by Rob Delport
