Moerane Commission hears how ANC member was shot

The African National Congress (ANC) member from Newcastle in northern KwaZulu-Natal has told the Moerane Commission that he was shot at an ANC meeting in 2016 where a councillor candidate was to be elected.

Hlanganani Nxumalo’s testimony mainly focused on the split of the organisation which led to violence.

Nxumalo said an argument broke out at the meeting and members from his own camp, who supported Cyril Ramaphosa, were prevented from attending the meeting, by people supporting Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

He testified that a bodyguard had fired a shot at him, hitting him in the arm.

The bodyguard is facing attempted murder charges. This split later caused the Emalahleni region of the ANC to be disbanded.

Nxumalo says, “It was disbanded because it was not supporting the candidate because even the chairperson was not doing things the way it was said it was going to be disbanded.”

Nxumalo was employed by the local municipality on the Extended Public Works Programme.

After the fallout with party colleagues, he says he was dropped from the employment scheme.

The commission is expected to hear the testimony of the Saps on Tuesday.
