Mnangagwa to release statement after SADC meeting

Zimbabwe’s dismissed Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa is to make a statement later on Thursday that could shed light on the way forward for the country.

Mnangagwa’s expected to issue a statement following Thursday afternoon’s urgent meeting of SADC Ministers in Botswana to discuss the Zimbabwe situation.

Mnangagwa was fired by President Robert Mugabe last week, but the Zimbabwe Defence Force then warned Mugabe about his actions and, this week, took control of the country.

Reports have suggested that Mnangagwa will play a major role in a political settlement.

Meanwhile, Mugabe is insisting he remains Zimbabwe’s only legitimate ruler and says he can only be removed from power by the ruling party, Zanu-PF.

SADC Ministers are expected to make recommendations to their governments on the way forward for Zimbabwe after Thursday’s meeting in Gaborone.
