Former deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka has been named among Apolitical’s 2018 list of World’s 100 Most Influential People on Gender Policy.

Mlambo-Ngcuka is currently the Executive Director for Women at the United Nations.

She has landed a place in the list’s top 20, alongside Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and London Mayor, Sadiq Khan.

The list recognises pioneering people across seven categories: Public Service, Politics, Academia, Philanthropy, International organisations, NGOs and Advocacy. Mlambo-Ngcuka explains her role at the UN.

“Our mandate is about changing lives and policies in the world that impacts on women, because we are an intergovernmental organisation. There are lots of laws in the world that are discriminating against women. We literally are in the field in more than 100 countries to push legislation and laws against violence on women. Fortunately SA is one of the countries that has done really well. But in changing the laws we need to do much better.”
