Mlambo-Ngcuka calls on citizens to support SA’s bid for UN seat

Former South African Deputy President and current Executive Director of United Nations Women Dr Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka has called on South Africans to rally behind government in its bid for a non-permanent seat at the Security Council.

South Africa will know in two weeks time the extent to which its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council has been successful.

Staff at the country’s permanent mission in New York is engaged in furious rounds of lobbying to ensure the support of as many member states as possible despite only requiring a two-thirds majority to attain the uncontested African seat.

Mlambo-Ngcuka says she is confident that Pretoria will receive a nod.

“It is important to support government and that South Africa must play a role in ensuring world peace when the country gets the votes for being rotational members on the Security Council.”
