Public Protector Busiswe Mkhwebane has found that Western Cape Premier Hellen Zille failed to act in good faith and in the best interest of good governance when she posted her colonialism tweet.

Mkwhebane released investigation reports and delivered the quarterly update on the work of her office.

Last year, Zille tweeted that colonialism wasn’t all negative. She later apologised, saying the comments were not a defense of colonialism.

ANC acting provincial chair, Khaya Magaxa laid a complaint with the Public Protector’s office.

As part of the remedial actions, Mkhwebane has ordered the Western Cape legislature to take action against Zille.

“In the light of the above findings, I make the following remedial actions. The speaker of the provincial Western Cape legislature must within 30 days, from the date of this report tabled before the Western Cape legislature, for it to take appropriate action to hold the premier accountable as contemplated in section 114(2), 133(2) and (3)(a0 and 13691) and 2(b) of the constitution,” says Mkhwebane.
