The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has announced that new gender grants have been awarded to three South African universities.

She made the announcement at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), Auckland Park –  Kingsway campus on Tuesday.

The recipients are the Universities of Johannesburg, Stellenbosch and Western Cape.

Markle is in Johannesburg as part of her of South African tour after spending time in Cape Town last week.

She says the goal of the gender grants is to promote gender equality.

“The goal here is to be able to have gender equality, to be able to support women as they are working in research and higher education roles and also to be able to have workshops that will really help people to understand the importance of gender equality. When a woman is empowered, it changes everything in the community and starting in the educational atmosphere is really a key point to all of that,” says Markle.
