MEC vows to ensure safety of women, children in W Cape

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Western Cape Community Safety Minister, Dan Plato, says his department will work with police to ensure the safety of women and children in communities across the province.

He’s launched the 16 Days of Activism campaign in the Marikana informal settlement near Philippi on the Cape Flats.

Plato has urged community members to speak out against abuse and violence, and be the voice of courage. He says Marikana is one of the areas hard hit by violence and death this year.
Plato says this is evident in the amount of children involved in criminality, and the luring of young people into a life of drugs and gangsterism.

He says youth are being abused not only physically, but socially to the point where they become gun-wielding killers.
