McCarthy’s City dents Pirates’ PSL title ambitions

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Cape Town City threw a spanner in the works in the race for the Absa Premiership title, when they held log leaders Orlando Pirates to a 2-2 draw at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday.

Just 18 seconds into the game Zuki Kewuti gave City a shock lead, but Thembikosi Lorch found an equaliser 15 minutes later.

Pirates went into the lead five minutes into the second when Luvuyo Memela scored, but Craig Martin found City’s equalizer five minutes before full-time.

City Coach Benni McCarthy says it was a great football game played in front of a packed stadium.  McCarthy says while he was happy with the result, he really feels they could have won the game.  The former Orlando Pirates player says he is sorry for Pirates not getting the result they needed, but says there is still a lot to play for in the next week.

Orlando Pirates Coach Milutin Sredojevic says they started on the back foot after the game was delayed for 15 minutes and then conceding in the opening minute.

Micho says they tried to throw everything at City in the end, and he cannot fault his players’ efforts.

Sredojevic understands this is a setback but he says it is important to keep the players mentally strong.

Pirates are now just one point ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns on the table, but Sundowns have a game in hand. – Report by Rob Delport
