Reading Time: < 1 minute

National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete says she is in the process of determining a suitable course of action against ANC MP Mervyn Dirks.

Dirks allegedly made threatening gestures to one his colleagues, Thozama Mantashe in parliament.

Meanwhile, African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu has also requested the party’s Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe to institute disciplinary action against Dirks.

Dirks allegedly insulted and threatened to assault Mantashe during yesterday’s sitting of the House.

Both Baleka and Mthembu say the allege threat fly in the face of the 16 Days of Activism which is raising awareness about violence against women and children.

Mbete says in this context the alleged conduct of Dirks is highly concerning and cannot be condoned. On the other hand Mthembu says the allege action amounts to gross misconduct and bring the organisation into disrepute.

He says it is unacceptable that a Member of Parliament can be found to be involved in such unbecoming behaviour.
