Mbete to engage relevant stakeholders regarding EFF’s motion of no confidence request

Reading Time: 2 minutes

National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete says she is consulting with all the relevant stakeholders on the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) application for a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma be scheduled for this week.

Among those to be consulted are the Chief Whip of the ANC Jackson Mthembu and the Leader of Government Business, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Mbete says reports that she had rejected the EFF’s request to schedule the Motion of No Confidence on Tuesday are therefore false.

The EFF has threatened that if they do not receive a satisfactory reply by 10am on Tuesday they will approach the High Court to compel her to reschedule the motion.

The Economic Freedom Fighters says they will go to court if there is no response on their call for the vote of no confidence to take place this week.

The motion is currently scheduled for the 22nd of this month. Opposition parties have also called for Parliament to be dissolved. This was decided at a joint meeting to pressure President Jacob Zuma to leave office.

The parties said last week that the country cannot be brought to a halt because of the ANC’s internal battles. EFF leader Julius Malema and other opposition parties have addressed a media briefing in Cape Town.
