Maths app launched in the Eastern Cape

Reading Time: 2 minutes

An Eastern Cape graduate has developed a maths app that aims to simplify the subject.

Athi Rwexu took the app on a road show in the Eastern Cape with the hope of enabling pupils to improving their mathematics marks.

With the Eastern Cape always performing poorly in matric, especially in mathematics results, the new app will play a huge role in helping them to understand the subject.

Rwexu, the mastermind behind SigmaX App, says their team has been visiting schools across the province and making presentations on how the app works.

At Mthatha’s BT Ngebs shopping mall, parents, learners and teachers surrounded Rwexu and her team, while she explained to them how it works.

Rwexu adds that no pupils should under perform in the subject.

“I’ve always found that mathematics is quite easy for me – especially high school maths, or school maths, as a person who’s always gotten like distinctions in maths. So I realised that we can actually do something to help learners understand maths better… because from tutoring I saw that they struggle, sometimes with very simple things like fractions or exponents… or understanding what quadrulaterals are, or solving simple equations or understanding why they need to solve those equations, or understanding why they need to solve those equations in the first place. That’s when we decided “OK,” let’s try this so that we lay some of the foundations.”

Learners have shown a keen interest in the app, hoping it will play a role in helping them improve their marks in mathematics.

Parents also agree they hope the app is a solution to the problems their children are currently experiencing.

The road show will later move to other provinces.
