Mathabatha calls for ‘political maturity’ on land debate

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Limpopo African National Congress (ANC) chairperson Stan Mathabatha says the expropriation of land without compensation must be dealt with in a politically mature manner.

He was speaking at the ANC special provincial general council in Polokwane.

A Parliamentary Review Committee has embarked on a road-show countrywide to listen to submissions on whether the constitution should be amended to facilitate the expropriation of land without compensation.

Mathabatha says the issue of land is critical.

“The land must be handled with a very sober and political matured way. The land question comrade is one of the things that caused the African National Congress to be formed; I believe comrades understand the importance of land… all economic production is taking place on land, that makes the land very critical and important. The land question is part of us as the African National Congress.”

ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) member Bongani Bongo says the conduct of ANC members in branches must preserve the legacy of former president Nelson Mandela.

Bongo addressed ANC members at the party’s provincial council meeting.

He says the ANC Women’s League league must also stand up and defend women’s leadership.

“Our conduct in branches, our conduct whenever… we are must be able to remind us that there’s Nelson Mandela – we need to bring this link of Comrade Mandela with the African National Congress. The ANC women’s league must stand to defend women’s leadership, comrades, we have agreed in Nasrec about unity and renewal, “says Bongo.
