Gauteng Co-operative Govenance MEC Paul Mashatile has accepted the resignation of Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor Simon Mofokeng.

His resignation comes in the wake of allegations that he was sexually grooming a 14-year-old girl.

Mofokeng resigned as both ANC councillor and Executive Mayor of Emfuleni Municipality which incorporates the historic townships of Shapeville, Evaton, Boipatong and the town of Vanderbijl Park.

He is yet to appear in court for the matter which police say they’re investigating.

He had been on special leave for the past three weeks.

He allegedly posted a semi-nude photo of a 14-year-old on a WhatsApp group of ANC leaders.

Mashatile says Mofokeng’s resignation is consistent with the principle of accountability and allows government to focus on service delivery.

He says this will allow him to answer to the serious allegations facing him.

Mofokeng leaves Emfuleni in a crisis with Rand Water cutting off 60% of water to the municipality because it is owed more than R360 million in outstanding debt.
