The National Energy Regulator of South Africa’s (Nersa) spokesperson Charles Hlebela has described Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba’s comments as unfortunate.
Earlier, Mashaba released a statement saying Nersa’s move to grant power utility Eskom’s tariff increase of 15.63% was a reward for corruption.
However, Hlebela says this fee relates to a guideline for bulk purchases for municipalities.

But the Joburg Mayor has warned that Nersa’s decision means that the City of Johannesburg will be forced to increase tariffs on electricity.
The increase will negatively affect already cash-strapped consumers.
