Mashaba hopes for government aid in Joburg disaster areas

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says he will know by Friday whether the Gauteng government will agree to declare parts of the city affected by Saturday’s hailstorm disaster areas.

The City’s Group Risk Advisory Services will also probe the City’s role in issuing certificates of occupation for the houses and the role of financial institutions, which funded the construction of the homes.

Two people were killed and several others injured as the storm wreaked havoc on the homes.

The City’s Group Risk Advisory Services will conduct the investigation.

“The purpose of it all is to identify who the contractors were in constructing the buildings. We also want to investigate the city’s role in issuing certificates of identification. Obviously, safety issues will come into play here. You cannot issue a certificate if a structure is not safe to live in. We are also looking into the role of financial institutions, like banks, and who are the people that funded these constructions because essentially these were,” said Spokesperson to the Speaker of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Council, Lillian Kolisang.

Hundreds of families in Gauteng have been left stranded after a storm ripped through the province at the weekend.
