Manhunt for Limpopo cash-in-transit robbers

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Limpopo police have launched a manhunt for the armed robbers following cash-in-transit-heist on Monday morning.

An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen during the robbery.

Police say robbers armed with explosives and riffles targeted a cash van which was travelling on the Matlala Road.

The latest incident comes as authorities are battling to control the number of cash-in-transit-heists that have hit the country.

Last week Thursday, the Hawks in Gauteng foiled a planned cash-in-transit-heist and arrested three suspects whom they believe were en-route to target a cash van on the N4 highway.

There has been growing public concern that the police appear unable to tackle these crimes.

Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lt-Gen Nneke Ledwaba, says it’s unclear whether the guards sustained any injuries, but they have been rushed to the nearest hospital.

Police are investigating the circumstances around this cash-in-transit-heist.

Meanwhile, five men arrested in connection with the daring cash heist in Boksburg east of Johannesburg earlier this month, are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The suspects face charges of armed robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder and possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition.

The five suspects are all expected to return to the dock, after their case was postponed last week for further investigation.

It’s alleged that the suspects ambushed two G4S cash vans and blew them open with commercial explosives before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspects were all arrested at the George Gogh hostel in Johannesburg following a high speed chase and shootout with police.

Several firearms including AK47 rifles, ammunition and some of the stolen money were seized.

The remaining suspects are still at large. -Additional reporting by Sashin Naidoo, Mike Maringa & Tshepiso Moche
