Management to relook at design of Moses Mabhida Stadium

Management at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban say they might be forced to re-visit the design of the stadium which at this stage makes it easy for spectators to access the field.

This comes after Kaizer Chiefs fans went on the rampage on Saturday evening, following their team’s loss in the Nedbank Cup Semi-Finals.

Eighteen people were injured, TV equipment and other infrastructure damaged and a portion of the stadium torched. A security guard was seriously injured.

Moses Mabhida stadium general manager Vusi Mazibuko says ironically the design of the stadium is aimed at ensuring the safety of both the spectators and the players.

“The design of the stadium takes into account the safety of the fans. Ironically the very design makes it easy to invade the stadium. Because remember the stadium was designed for humans, we needed to ensure that in the event where there was a problem either fire or ant incident it must be easy for spectators to assemble in the pitch, because the pitch itself is an assembly point for spectators. The second element of the design was to ensure that the spectators have a better sight view of the stadium – can you imagine if we were to cage the stadium and put high fences, it would then impact on the experience of the spectator in watching the match.”
