Man accused of murdering girlfriend granted bail

A man, who allegedly killed his pregnant girlfriend and set her body alight, has been granted R1 000  bail by the Lichtenburg Magistrate’s court  on Friday.

Dodosi Chika is facing charges of assault and murder. He is expected to be back in the court on the 28th March.

Members of the community were chanting slogans outside the Lichtenburg magistrate court prior to the bail application.

They were calling for no bail against the accused, Dodosi Chika. Chika assaulted and stabbed her helpless pregnant girlfriend at their farm home in Gordau, just outside Lichtenburg, on Christmas day last year.

It is not clear what exactly happened between the couple. All this happened in front of their one year old daughter. The victim, Kebiditswe Semenekane was laid to rest on Friday morning, at her home township of Blydeville in Lichtenburg.

Meanwhile, Police have arrested 16 people in a lockdown operation in Hanover Park on the Cape Flats. Seven repeat offenders were arrested for outstanding warrants for various crimes, such as murder, possession of drugs and shoplifting.

“Search operations were conducted for firearms and illegal substances, as well as for repeat offenders for whom warrants of arrest had been issued. The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula, thanked the police members involved, and commended them for their work. He said that police will maintain a zero tolerance approach towards crime and its perpetrators,” said Western Cape police spokesperson, FC van Wyk.

In Mpumalanga, the case of murder against a 25-year-old man has been postponed to January the 12th by the Ermelo magistrate’s court .

The suspect will be in custody until his next appearance where he will apply for legal assistant. He is believed to be behind the death of his girlfriend, 24 year-old Nomcebo Mokoena who was stabbed to death on December 16th last year.

The victim was found by her mother the next day with multiple stab wounds. Community members were outside court this morning in support of the victim’s family.
