The newly-appointed mayor of the trouble-torn Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality in the Free State, Gilbert Mokotso, and 14 other African National Congress Councillors have been prohibited from participating in party activities, pending a disciplinary hearing.

This comes after they allegedly colluded with the opposition in appointing the mayor, speaker and chief whip about two-weeks ago.

Provincial ANC spokesperson, Thabo Meeko, says councillors defied the party’s instructions related to the election of the new leadership.

“When you defy the ANC decisions, you are defying the constitution of the ANC, hence the decision to suspend this 14 comrades who colluded with the opposition and put their own government and undermined the ANC organisational discipline. The issue is that they are suspended as members of the ANC, they will not participate in the ANC activities including the ANC caucus at the level of the municipality. But they can proceed as public representatives in that municipality up until the disciplinary processes outcomes dictates otherwise.”
