The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation or Hawks has released the name of the suspect linked to the attack on the Malmesbury Mosque in the north of Cape Town last month.

Spokesperson for the Hawks, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi says the suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Nur Arawal from Somalia.

Two people were killed and a police officer was injured while observing the ritual of I’tikaaf.

I’tikaaf is normally observed during the last 10 days of Ramadan as a period of intense spiritual introspection.

He says Arawal was an outpatient at the Bellville’s Karl Bremer Psychiatric Hospital in 2013 until recently.

The motive for the attack is not yet established but there are no links to suggest any involvement of extremists or radical activity.

Arawal’s remains have been handed over to the family for repatriation and burial.
