Malawi targeting knockout stage at Cosafa Cup

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Malawi national women’s team coach Abel Mkhandawire wants victory in the opening Group A match at the Cosafa Cup against Madagascar on Wednesday (Kick-off at 12:45).

The two sides meet in the second game of the tournament at Wolfson Stadium in Port Elizabeth. This is a second meeting between the countries at this stage of this tournament in as many years.

Malawi were 2-0 winners of that encounter and Mkhandawire hopes for a repeat in results that can inspire his team’s campaign.

Mkhandawire admits the presence of their multi-talented vice-captain Towera Vinkhumbo cannot be underestimated.

Vinkhumbo is also a defender for the country’s netball team and she was with them at the Netball World Cup in England.

Meanwhile, the 28-year-old says navigating between different codes and national teams is not difficult for her.

Before going to the Netball World Cup Vinkhumbo was playing in the 2020 Olympic Games with the football team in April. She says she always has pressure.

This match follows the tournament opener, a Group C clash between Zimbabwe and Angola (10:00).

Host nation South Africa and Comoros Islands will follow at 15:30 at the free to enter venue. Report by Lethabo Kganyago
