Makhura’s office knew about Esidimeni contract termination plan: Selebano

Suspended head of the Gauteng Health Department Dr Barney Selebano has dropped a bombshell saying Premier David Makhura’s office knew and approved the plan to terminate the Life Esidimeni contract.

Selebano says the plan was presented to Makhura’s Budget Council which the Premier chairs. The Gauteng government previously denied that the Premier neither knew nor approved the transfer of patients.

Selebano is being cross-examined by Legal Aid SA’s Advocate Lilla Crouse at the Life Esidimeni hearings in Parktown, Johannesburg.

Crouse asks: “The Premier sits with these MECs. So you’re saying the Premier knew, are you saying the Premier gave his approval?”

Selebano answered: “In his person I wouldn’t know, but I know that at the PBC we presented and they know about our plans. Then the MEC takes it again to the executive committee and they discuss there. And when we then implement, we conclude that they had the knowledge of what we’re doing. Somehow is part of this collective, where nobody takes responsibility isn’t it,” says Selebano.
