The Department of Water and Sanitation is stepping in to assist the cash strapped Makana Municipality in Grahamstown to buy water purifying chemicals and rectify its water supply system.

For more than two weeks now residents in some parts of Grahamstown have brown and even foul smelling water coming from their taps.

The deputy minister of Water and Sanitation, Pam Tshwete, went to Grahamstown to get a first-hand account of the situation.

Tshwete says they are taking action as the situation is intolerable. She says funds will be made available but procedures need to be followed.

Residents are still urged to boil the water before use until the situation has normalised.
