Maimane to visit embattled Mahikeng

Democratic Alliance Leader Mmusi Maimane is expected in the capital city of Mahikeng in North West on Saturday morning. His presence will include a visit to one of the closed clinics.

Several clinics have been closed for over a month as a result of National Health Education & Allied Workers Union strike. Maimane’s visit comes after that of President Cyril Ramaphosa, who met with African National Congress structures on Friday.

The President called for calm, saying as a collective they will address the concerns of the residents. Mahikeng has been engulfed in violent protests since Wednesday with residents calling on North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo to resign.

The violent protests have left a trail of destruction in the town. Foreign nationals’ shops were looted, while several cars were torched. The Mmabana Arts Foundation Building which was also partially burnt.
