Maimane slams upcoming ANC conference

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has cast doubt on the successful running of the ANC national elective conference, set for the 16th of this month. Maimane says judging from the fact that ANC has been taken to court by its members, questioning the outcomes of provincial and regional conferences, there is a possibility that its conference will be characterized by lawlessness. He was addressing the provincial elective congress of the DA in Klerksdorp, North West.

The DA leader has likened the ANC to criminals, saying police must be ready to go and maintain order at the conference: “We must say to the police, look police, the tsotsis are united at Nasrec in December, all the police in South Africa, please go there. Those people could kill each other at the conference . Those people, we don’t know what they are going to do. So, please go there police, so that you can protect them, because in 2019 we need them in opposition, and strong opposition for that matter.”

President Jacob Zuma did not escape the DA leader’s wrath. Maimane says they want Zuma to be tried for 783 charges related to corruption, money laundering and racketeering, among others. He added that laws must be changed, so that the president does not appoint the director for the National Prosecuting Authority.

“When the DA comes in, we will change the law, so that the president must not appoint the head of the National Prosecuting Authority. Jacob Zuma chose Shawn Abrahams because Shaun Abrahams knows how to protect Jacob Zuma. In our view, Jacob Zuma is accused number 1.”

Meanwhile, Joe McGluwa was re-elected leader of the DA in North West. He says the battle is for the DA to now become the main opposition party in the provincial legislature.”The DA was never being replaced. The DA was never being the opposition. We are working hard towards that. It was only unfortunate at the time when we reached our peak, it was then when the EFF actually came into the whole picture. But what we are saying is, we are an alternative government. Anyone can come to the legislature, you will see our attendance and you will also see our role that we are playing.”

Meanwhile, the ANC has rubbished speculation that it will not successfully hold the National Elective Conference. Party Secretary General Gwede Mantashe said the fact that there were disputes must not be regarded as a threat to the conference.
