Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has promised to revive jobs in the ailing sugar industry in KwaZulu-Natal. Maimane was speaking at Umzinto on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast as part of the party’s Kasi-to-Kasi campaign trail.
He was accompanied by provincial leader Zwakele Mncwango and others. They listened to concerns of community members about high unemployment and poor services.
Maimane promised to work with small businesses to revive the sugar cane industry, which once was a leading employer locally.
He also promised to fix severe water shortages in the Ugu District, which includes Umzinto. “ It’s become very clear that no services are being delivered and when you arrive here the effect of load shedding exacerbated that problem, the hospitals and the clinics don’t work. Ultimately the people end up without work because manufacturing doesn’t work and so we came in the community to try and invite South Africans to say we need change. We can’t be oppressed by corruption, we need a change, actually deliver one South Africa for all, a job in every home and we have a plan and we call upon all South Africans to say let’s join in together tomorrow to take action against this government so that we can force the changes that we need because ultimately South Africans want to live in a country that can ensure that we prosper together and there is a job in every home.”
Meanwhile, Umzinto resident Sihle Saqosha says people understand the issues the party is raising and will be voting for the DA.
“I think DA is there and Mmusi Maimane has said a lot of things about these people and I think people understand if the DA is there you can make a better life and a better future. I think state capture is a very big issue.”
