Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has appealed to communities that are embarking on violent protests to ensure that they use the May elections to bring change in their areas.

The call by the DA leader comes as the country is experiencing a wave of service delivery protests.

Maimane was on the campaign trail in Rustenburg in the North West. He  has also promised to meet with residents of Alexandra in Johannesburg where residents staged violent protests this week.

“I want to meet with the people of Alexandra. I will be going there to make sure we seat with families of people, to say, let us do whatever we can to bring service delivery. The money that the ANC stole there, over a billion rand in Alexandra Renewal Program, I hope Mr Ramaphosa will assist in making sure that there’s an investigation into ANC comrades who stole that money. We could have used that money to develop Alexandra.”

Meanwhile, the  South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in Gauteng will convene an inquiry next Thursday in an attempt to find a lasting solution to the issues plaguing residents at the Alexandra.

The commission announced this during a special City of Joburg council meeting on Friday.

On Monday, Jo’burg Mayor Herman Mashaba will meet with members of the community in the troubled township.

Residents in the area are demanding better services.

The SAHRC’s Buang Jones says he will have a consultation with the residents on Thursday.

“We used this opportunity to inform the city. The mayor did not know that the commission intended to constitute a formal inquiry. So, we thought this is a perfect opportunity to announce the commission’s intentions. This public inquiry will also be extended to the people of Alexandra where members of the community will be invited to share their lived experiences.”
