Maimane criticises NHI

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has severely criticised government for forging ahead with plans to implement the National Health Insurance Bill. Maimane was speaking during the party’s programme to monitor service delivery in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.

He says government should rather focus on improving the public health care system.

On Thursday, Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi announced the Medical Schemes Amendment Bill, which will pave way for the implementation of the NHI. The NHI is government’s proposed policy for introducing affordable health care. Maimane says the country’s public health care challenges will continue.

“National Health Insurance is unaffordable, let’s be frank our people need health care, but the ANC has destroyed public health care by hiring the wrong people, and they want now to take a programme that would be the most expensive. It will cripple the economy, we don’t have money for the NHI, our proposal is that there must be a universal health care.”
