Determined to have his party take the seat of power after the polls, DA leader Mmusi Maimane was among the first to cast his vote on Wednesday morning in Dobsonville, Soweto.

Gauteng remains a hotly contested province with the highest number of registered voters sitting at 6.4 million.

The leader of the Democratic Alliance believes Gauteng is his for the taking.

Maimane is of the view that the country’s democracy has veered off course.

Among those voting with Maimane, was 69-year-old Nora Mosobe, first in line to cast her ballot.

“I’m very happy to be voting, I came here early wanting to be the first in line.”

Voting stations closed at 21:00.
