Mahumapelo’s planned press briefing postponed indefinitely

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The press conference which was scheduled to be addressed by the North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo on Wednesday at 10:00am has been postponed indefinitely.

Provincial spokesperson Brian Setswambung did not elaborate on the reasons for the postponement.

In an exclusive interview with the SABC Tuesday, Mahumapelo said he will be giving the speaker his letter of resignation.

The premier has been under a lot of pressure recently when some community members went on a rampage and barricaded some roads calling for him to resign.

Mahumapelo will Wednesday morning meet with the ANC Provincial Executive Committee to discuss is exit from the premier’s office.

He told SABC News last night that he’ll also meet with the provincial government over his decision to quit.

His resignation follows weeks of unrest in the North West with communities calling for him to leave.

Meanwhile, the media briefing in which he was to clarify his reasons has been postponed indefinitely.

Mahumapelo says the political climate determines the leadership.

Cabinet is expected to discuss and endorse Mahumapelo’s resignation on Wednesday.

The executive member of the North-West Business Forum, Themba Gwabeni, has welcomed Mahumapelo’s imminent resignation from high office.

“There is no government; the state has long being looted. We can predict the outcome of this Ministerial Task Team that the Premier must go now.  The ball is in the cabinet and the hands of the President,” adds Gwabeni.
