Mahumapelo speaks out about Zuma meeting

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Former North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo says it’s unfortunate for the newspaper journalist to conclude that his meeting with other ANC top officials was to discuss the toppling of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

According to a Sunday newspaper report in September, former President Jacob Zuma held a clandestine meeting with top ANC officials including the party’s Secretary General Ace Magashule, Mahumapelo and Youth League Secretary in KZN, Thanduxolo Sabelo.

It says the discussions were also about a strategy that involves challenging the outcomes of last year’s ANC national conference which elected Ramaphosa as ANC President.

During an exclusive interview with SABC News in Mahikeng Wednesday morning, Mahumapelo said, “As soon as I had taken a decision of retiring early from the position of deployment as premier, I thought it prudent and important to go and meet with President Jacob Zuma, to discuss and give reasons for exiting that particular position and upon my arrival there he had many other people he was meeting. So one of the people who were there were the secretary generals of the ANC and the ANC Women’s League, and I cannot behave as if I don’t know them when I arrived there and not talk to them and so on.”
