Political analyst Goodfriday Mhlongo says the African National Congress (ANC) has taken into account what the people of the North West were demanding by accepting Supra Mahumapelo’s resignation as premier, but allowing him to continue as the party’s provincial chairperson.

On Wednesday the ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule sought to explain what Mahumapelo meant by ‘taking early retirement’.

Addressing the media at Luthuli House Magashule said Mahumapelo simply meant he had resigned, but remained the provincial ANC chairperson.

Mhlongo says Mahumapelo remains in charge in the North West.

He says: “He’s very much in charge. In terms of the running of our political system, the premier is not necessarily the most important person. It is the political office, which in this case is the ruling party, and Supra being the head of that political office as the chairperson of the province, in essence he’s in charge.”
