African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Ace Magashule has called on health organisations to adopt more preventative approaches towards the outbreak of Listeriosis. He was addressing the media briefing in Johannesburg following a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee.

More than 180 people have died following the outbreak after eating ready-to-eat processed meat, such as polony, russians, sausages and viennas.

Magashule has urged all members of the public to remain vigilant.

“NWC noted with great concern a recent outbreak of Listeriosis. We are especially despaired by the high number of fatalities. This has been the largest outbreak in history and must be treated with the urgency and seriousness it deserves and we urge all citizens to remain vigilant and ensure that they follow the guidelines by the health authorities to ensure food safety.”
