Reading Time: < 1 minute

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and the African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat have paid tribute to late struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, terming the news of her death as saddening.

Kenyatta described Mama Winnie as a heroine and a liberator.

In a written tribute, President Kenyatta described Winnie Mandela as an icon who dedicated her life in the struggle to free her country from the stranglehold of apartheid.

Kenyatta further said that Africans should emulate her and use her courage to inspire the continent to make the most of the liberty she won.

Meanwhile, African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat described her as a fearless campaigner who sacrificed much of her life for freedom in South Africa.

Last year, Madikizela-Mandela received a lifetime achievement award from the African Union in recognition of her fight against colonial oppression.
