Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille says she remembers the day former President Nelson Mandela made his first speech as a free man in 1990, as if it was yesterday.

Mandela delivered his maiden address to the people of South African from the first floor balcony at Cape Town City Hall 28 years ago on the 11 of February.

A life-size bronze statue of Madiba has now been erected which will eternalise that moment.

Speaking at the unveiling of the statue, De Lille says, “I was worried that I was not going to see what he looked like because all of us came, we just wanted to see also what he looked like. I think the speech was a bonus for us. The temperatures must have been in the 30 degrees, but you didn’t feel the heat. You just wanted to be there, the joy and the energy you know, it’s like I can feel like it like it was yesterday.”
