Proceedings at the 17th annual Mandela Lecture at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto campus are under way with Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng saying Madiba had exemplified the willingness to learn and improve.

Justice Mogoeng says Nelson Mandela was conscious of his human fallibility.

He says Madiba remains the country’s key role model in facing down challenges and working for a better country.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Mandela Foundation’s chairperson Njabulo Ndelebe said South Africa had made history with its ground-breaking bill of rights more than 20 years ago.

He said the Bill of Rights was an indigenous creation – and was pioneered by those seeking to liberate South Africa – including black lawyers and community activists.
