Mabuza in South Sudan to facilitate peace talks

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Deputy President, David Mabuza is in South Sudan for a two-day visit aimed at pushing forward its peace process.

South Africa says it wants to see South Sudan transition into a peaceful country. That’s the main agenda of the visit by the South Africa’s Deputy President.

The visit comes after former rival groups in South Sudan have twice postponed formation of a unity government which is designed to end civil war in the country. A new government is now scheduled to be formed in February 2020.

However that’s only if security sector reforms are complete. Mabuza is scheduled to meet with President Salva Kiir. He’ll also hold talks with leaders from South Sudan’s ruling party, the Sudan’s People’s Liberation Movement.

Mr Mabuza is due to have discussions with heads of opposition groups, representatives of civil societies, South Sudan’s national dialogue committee and the special envoy from regional body IGAD.
